Super Savers SuperFoodsNews Flash! Filling your grocery bag with the SuperFoods is an economical and healthy way to feed your family. Contrary to what you might have heard, eating healthy doesn't need to break the family bank. You can save money and still include SuperFoods in your regular diet.

Here are a few examples:

Canned Salmon
Look for water-packed canned salmon instead of fresh. Canned salmon has the same nutrients as fresh salmon but it costs a lot less. Almost all canned salmon is wild, unless it says 'Atlantic salmon' on the label. Canned, water-packed tuna and canned sardines, are also inexpensive ways to get your omega-3s and other important nutrients. You can include canned salmon in pasta dishes or add it to a salad. The tuna salad recipe on page 229 of our best-selling, SuperfoodsRx, Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life, book is great tasting and inexpensive.

Frozen Blueberries
Frozen blueberries are much less expensive than fresh berries and have nearly the same nutritional content. Also, since you only take out of the freezer the portion you need, you don't have to worry about berries becoming moldy before you eat them.

Ground Turkey
Ground turkey is lower in fat so it doesn't shrink much when you cook it, so a pound of ground turkey goes a lot farther than any other ground meat. Try ground turkey in burgers, tacos or the pasta recipe on page 215 of SuperFoodsRx, Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life.

Beans
Beans are one of the healthiest and most economical sources of protein. They are also a fantastic source of dietary fiber, B vitamins, iron, folate, potassium and many of the crucial phytonutrients we're always talking about here at SuperFoodsRx. A pound of dried beans or a 30-ounce can of beans costs less than $2.00. This makes beans a real meal deal. Try the White Bean Soup with Greens and Rosemary on page 238 of SuperFoodsRx, Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life. I also like the Bean and Veggie Burrito recipe on page 263 of The SuperFoodsRX Diet book.

Oats
Oats are a real value and can be used in many ways. Of course, oatmeal makes a wonderful breakfast and even dessert (try the Apple-Oat Crisp on page 83 of SuperFoodsRx, Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life), but it also can be incorporated into meat and bean dishes to stretch your meal and save you money. A typical container of oatmeal only costs about 10 cents an ounce.

Remember, a healthy SuperFoodsRx diet will work with your budget!
