It's the New Year and everyone is making and quickly breaking their resolutions. Chief among these is the universal plan to lose some weight. Me too. So before I start (again), I thought I should get some good, solid scientifically based information on weight loss. There is no more up-to-date and comprehensive source for diet and weight-loss advice than Dr. Wendy Bazilian's and Dr. Steven Pratt's book, The SuperFoodsRx Diet.
If you're interested in really tackling that waistline in 2009, it is the book to read. One of the most important rules is: portion control. We eat way too much. "No way" I say. I'm pretty careful and always watch how much I eat. For instance, this morning I had a bowl of whole grain Cheerios with skim milk for breakfast. According to the label, a one-cup serving with a half-cup of skim milk is only 100 calories! Hey, that's pretty good. But…on page 116 of the good Doctors' book they suggest a little experiment. Try actually measuring the amount of cereal in your typical breakfast bowl. So I did. As it turns out, my usual bowl of Cheerios wasn't a single serving according to the nutrition label. Actually, it was more like 4 servings of Cheerios and a lot more than half a cup of skim milk per cup of cereal! So my healthy 100 calorie breakfast bowl is actually more like 500 calories! I'm making the appropriate adjustments. Try that experiment yourself. Now that's information that will really help me with my weight-loss resolution. |
