Do you remember a presidential campaign a few years ago that popularized the slogan "It's the economy stupid!"?
It was a way of letting everyone know what was really important. Here at SuperFoodsRx we're going to start a new slogan; "It's the Skin Stupid!" But we're not talking about your skin. (Although you'll see some important, and beneficial changes in our skin if you include the SuperFood's nutrients in your daily diet.) No, we're going to focus on the skins of many of the SuperFoods, and why that skin is so important. Take apples for instance. Apples are a powerful SuperFood. In a host of important studies, regular consumption of apples is linked to significant reduction of the risk of developing Type II Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Asthma, and some cancers. Apples contain special phytonutrients like phloridzin and phloretin xylogucoside that give apples their unique and potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. But there's a catch. The vast majority of all that great disease fighting, health promoting 'stuff' with complicated chemical names is in the peel of the apple, not the meat! For instance, the peel has six times the antioxidant power of the meat! It's the same for tomatoes, cranberries, oranges and grapes and blueberries (Click here to see an earlier article on blueberry skin. Even the brownish skins of nuts like peanuts and almonds contain a much larger portion than does the meat inside of these very important phytonutrients. |
