To be healthy, you need to pay attention to more than just good foods and exercise. You also need to pay attention to your mental state and attitude. Studies have shown there are significant health risks for people who have emotional distress such as anger, anxiety, stress, frustration, resentment and depression.
For example, intensely felt negative emotions can lead to an increase incidence of premature cardiovascular death, as well as greatly increased complications after a heart attack. One study found that participants with the highest levels of anger were at a significant risk for developing premature heart attacks. Another study demonstrated an increase in anger expression was linked with an increase in hypertension. Reading or listening to the news lately is enough to make any of us depressed, anxious or even angry. But we now know these reactions will only do our bodies harm. So what are we supposed to do during these trying times? We need to remember Sammy Cahn's lyrics for "High Hopes." Next time you're found, with your chin on the ground To be healthy we need to have a positive attitude and find reasons to be hopeful. If you look around in the SuperFoodsRX books you'll learn a great deal about developing positive mental attitude. For example, when you are experiencing negative feelings try slow deep breathing or listen to your favorite music. You can also seek out fun and friends. Another good technique is to escape into nature. Take a walk in a park, a garden or along a waterfront. Try a hike up a mountain or down a trail. Or just surround yourself with plants and watch a bird from your window. Another way to maintain a positive attitude is to make time for reflection. At the end of each day, take a look back and think of three successful things you did that day. By focusing on your successes, small or large, you will create hope that you will again be successful tomorrow. For even more detailed information on how to gain personal peace and a healthier attitude, look around at pages 176 through 185 of the SuperFoodsRX Healthstyle book.
