School Lunches: A Better Way

Healthy School lunchesWell, summer is winding down, and for a lot of us that means back to school for our kids.  Stop by your local  Office Depot or Staples and they're are packed with students and their parents stocking up on supplies for the coming school year. Everyone is adjusting to early morning schedules, getting breakfast on the table and the kids dressed and out the door on time to catch the bus or the carpool.

Holy Cow!!  Don’t forget to make and pack the lunches!!!

I’ve seen a lot of school lunches over the years and I have an idea of what’s in a typical American schoolboy/girl lunch box.

Look familiar? Oh Yeah it does….this is a fairly common school lunchbox menu across the USA.

Here's a rough nutritional breakdown of what you'll find in a typical lunch:

A More-or-Less Typical School Lunch
Typical School LunchBologna sandwich on white bread
Single serving canned fruit
Bag of chips
Cookies
Juice

Calories 740
Fat 28g
Sodium 880g
Protein 8g
Sugar 57g
Fiber less than 2g
Average Cost: $3.00

SuperFoodsRx thinks there's a better solution. Take a look…...

A SuperFoodsRx Healthy Lunchbox
SuperFoodsRx LunchTurkey sandwich on whole wheat bread
1 cup fresh blueberries
Single serving Yogurt
Whole wheat crackers
Water

Calories 454
Fat 4g
Sodium 681g
Protein 33g
Sugar 34g
Fiber 17g
Average Cost $4.00

Generally speaking our recommendation has fewer calories and of those calories fewer from fat, less sodium, less refined sugar, and more protein.

But as always with SuperFoodsRx, it's not just what is left out of a meal but what is in the SuperFoods. Our Healthy Lunchbox includes fresh fruit(blueberries) loaded with all the important phytonutrients and antioxidants we're always talking about, whole grains in the bread and crackers so there's lots of fiber and nutrients essential to health, and low-fat yoghurt with live cultures, and low fat turkey. That’s four SuperFoods in this simple meal!!!

Now your child gets a real jolt of nutrient dense, low calorie, high energy SuperFoods to help carry him or her through the rest of the day.

The cost is a little higher for this particular healthful meal vs. the typical lunch, mostly because of the fresh blueberries, but that is not always the case. We think the small price premium is worth it. Look for some more healthful lunch box suggestions in the next article.
