At one of our son's first soccer games of the season, a mom showed up with a post-game snack and a snack schedule for the remaining games. The snack? A package of pre-made chocolate muffins from the local grocery store and a carton of those little boxes of kids' juice with the plastic straw glued to the side. Not an uncommon choice. If you have young kids participating in team sports these days, you've probably seen the economy box of bagged cookies, the cupcakes, and even doughnuts distributed as snacks to young, sweaty athletes.
I'm sure these parents have the very best of intentions. Here at SuperFoodsRx we know there is a better choice when it comes to snacks for our children. Especially a post-sports snack! As every one who reads the SuperFoodsRx books and website knows, exercise is part of the foundation of a healthy SuperFoodsRx life. Through regular exercise, young athletes are helping all their physical systems perform at a higher, healthier level. So make sure that good snacking habits, instilled at this young age, contribute to your children's future, healthier life! Post-game snacks should always have a balance of some carbs, some protein and some healthy fat. And young kids sweat just like adults, so pay careful attention to re-hydration. Include lot's of plain, old, cool water or a very low-sugar drink. (By the way, studies show that water is still the best thing to drink after sports.) Some SuperFoodsRx Snack ideas:
At SuperFoodsRx we always try to emphasize the positive ways to make our lives a little healthier. So when your time comes on the snack schedule remember that healthy snacking is a small, but important way we can all begin to teach our children habits that will pay wonderful dividends as they grow in to adults. |
