HeadacheQuestion: Dear Dr. Harris, I am worried about my husband. He has a very stressful job and I think it is beginning to affect his health. He does exercise and lift weights, but he gets frequent headaches and seems to be constantly angry. Recently, his doctor told him that his blood pressure and pulse were slightly elevated. I have started him eating SuperFoods, but I am still worried. Is there anything else he can do to minimize his stress and stay healthy?

Answer: We at SuperFoodsRx, recommend the following seven habits for healthy living and stress reduction:
  • Eat a balanced diet of SuperFoods.
  • Take a daily multivitamin supplement with fish oil.
  • Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Spend at least 15 minutes each day involved in a stress-reducing activity.

It seems that your husband might benefit by adding a stress-reducing activity to his routine. Stress-reducing activities are ways to relax and help cope with daily pressure. By including relaxation time into his day, your husband can begin to see benefits to his mood and health. Stress reduction can slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure, control breathing rate, increase blood flow, and relax tense muscles. Furthermore, relaxation techniques can help improve tension headaches, chronic back pain, abdominal pain, mood, anger, energy, concentration, and problem-solving. Talk to your husband about finding some time each day to relax and lower his stress.

Stress Reducing Activities:

  • Tai Chi
  • Yoga
  • Mindful Breathing
  • Listening to Music
  • Playing Music
  • Meditation
  • Hypnosis/ Self-hypnosis
  • Massage
  • Hobby Activities
  • Prayer or other Spiritual Activities

Please note: I do not recommend watching television as a stress reducing activity.

Getting started should be easy. Most gyms offer yoga and/or tai chi and make it comfortable and easy for new people to start up. Many of my patients have hobbies that they have neglected and often a simple reminder can get them back to enjoying their free-time.

Hope this helps,

Geoffrey R. Harris, MD
